Obituary

Ruth Ann Nelson, 83, of Huntsville, passed away April 16, 2026.

Ruth Ann Sutton Nelson, affectionately known as Mom, Ruth, Grandy, and Pastor Mom, was born on July 29, 1942, in Mount Pleasant, TN. She lived a life marked by unwavering faith, deep love, and a radiant presence that touched all who knew her.

Ruth met the love of her life, her high school sweetheart, David Allen Nelson, and they were married on September 6, 1958. Together, they built a beautiful life and legacy centered on faith, family, and ministry.

She was a devoted mother to her two sons: Greg Nelson (wife Laquita) and Rusty Nelson (wife Leisa). Her legacy continues through her six grandchildren: Adam Nelson (wife Lindsey), Jacob Nelson (wife Anna), Ashlynne Bell (husband Spencer), Ben Nelson (wife Kristal), Alex Nelson (wife Mariah), and Annaleis Nelson. She was also the proud great-grandmother of ten: Cruce Bell, Oliver Nelson, Roslyn Nelson, Alaythea Nelson, Rowen Nelson, Cannon Bell, Charlotte Bell, Lexi Kate Nelson, Grace Nelson, and Winnie Nelson.

Ruth loved the Lord with all her heart, and her life reflected that devotion in every way. She carried the love of God like a magnet—drawing people in with warmth, kindness, and genuine care. Ministry was not just something she did; it was who she was. She poured herself into others, mentoring, encouraging, and embracing people as family. It was no surprise she became known to so many as “Pastor Mom.” Through her ministry with Eagle’s Wings, she continued to extend that calling—lifting others, speaking life, and creating spaces where people could encounter God’s love in a personal way.

She was the ultimate pastor’s wife—faithful, steady, and full of grace. Her love for her family was fierce and constant, and she created a home filled with joy, belonging, and faith.

Ruth also had a love for beauty—anything sparkly, the color burgundy, and the vibrant community of the hair salon, where she connected deeply with others. She was not only gifted in her craft but respected in her field, becoming a state examiner for cosmetology, where she helped guide and shape future generations in the profession. She had a heart for teaching and a gift for making people feel seen, valued, and loved.

Her words, “I sure do love you,” were more than a phrase—they were a reflection of her heart. And everyone who knew her felt it.

Ruth Ann Nelson leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and spiritual motherhood that will continue for generations. Her life was a testimony of God’s goodness, and her influence will echo in the lives she touched forever.
