Obituary

Stephanie Jo Lawrence, born in Decatur, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at the age of 67. A devoted daughter, sister, aunt, attorney, and advocate for others, Stephanie lived a life that always put others before herself.

Stephanie graduated from Decatur High School in 1976 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Mississippi State University. She began her career as a social worker in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, where her dedication to helping others quickly became evident. Driven by a desire to make an even greater impact, she continued her education at the University of Mississippi School of Law (Ole Miss), graduating second in her class.

Following law school,Stephanie worked with Mitchell Voge Law Firm in Tupelo before eventually opening her own law firm there. Throughout her legal career, she was known not only for her sharp legal mind but also for her generous spirit, providing extensive pro bono work to those who needed it most. In the early 2000s, Stephanie returned home to Decatur to be closer to her family.

In 2017, Stephanie co-founded a women's group, Women's Day Out ("WDO"), that still gathers once a month for fellowship and friendship. Beyond social gatherings, the group also gives back to the community by raising money and collecting donations to benefit local charities and nursing homes. Stephanie was also known for having a green thumb and enjoyed helping others with their flower gardens. Like her Mama, she loved to hit the dance floor whenever the opportunity arose. She could also be credited with starting the fashion fad of wearing pajama pants to Walmart. Stephanie was a nonjudgmental, carefree spirit who made people feel welcome just as they were.

Stephanie was preceded in death by her parents, B.J. and Nita Lawrence, and her brother, Steve Lawrence, all of Decatur.

She is survived by her brother Kent Lawrence (Mamie) of Decatur; her sister Kim Lawrence Lemmond (Jeff) of Hartselle; and her sister-in-law Sue Lawrence of Pipe Creek. She is also survived by her nephews Alex Lawrence (Allison) of Charleston, Jeremiah Frost (Canetha) of Decatur, Taylor Lawrence (Ali Love) of Decatur, and Logan Lawrence Lemmond of Hartselle; her niece Ali Shelton (Tony) of Hartselle; great-nephews Tristan Smith and Landon Frost of Decatur; and great-nieces Brynn Shelton and Laken Shelton of Hartselle. Most importantly, Stephanie leaves behind her loving fur-baby, Molly, who brought her great comfort and joy.

A memorial service will be held at Point Mallard Prayer Chapel on Sunday, March 22 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Stephanie's memory to Hospice of the Valley (240 Johnston St SE, Decatur, AL 35601) or the Mental Health Association in Morgan County (1944 Central Pkwy SW, Decatur, AL 35601).

Berryhill Funeral Home assisted the family.
