Stephen Ray Alverson, born on October 24, 1949, and raised in Hazel Green, Alabama, passed away at his home in Meridianville, Alabama, on May 7, 2026.
Steve is survived by his wife, Gwen Alverson; daughters, Shawn Phillips (Scott) and Brandi Mellgren; granddaughters, Sydney Phillips, Kennedi Phillips, and Berkli Phillips; grandsons, Jon Steven Mellgren and Will Mellgren; brother, Harold Alverson (Kaye); and nephews, Jason Alverson, Brad Alverson, and Brian Alverson.
He is also remembered by his sister‑in‑law, Lana Spera, Richard Spera, and niece Victoria, who he cherished as part of his extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and John Alverson, and his brother Roy Alverson.
Steve built a career as a tool maker supporting NASA and the defense industry before retiring from Chrysler Corporation in 2009. He cherished time spent with friends and family, his many woodworking projects in his shop, quiet afternoons napping in his hammock, and loved traveling. He especially loved spending wintertime in Naples, Florida, where he created long-lasting friendships with people from all over the country.
His greatest joy in life was his family. First, his two daughters, and then the grandchildren who became the center of his world. He delighted in watching them grow, cheering them on in their activities, and creating treasured memories—whether through tractor rides on his John Deere or countless outdoor adventures. Time with them was always the highlight of his day.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 9th from 12:00 - 2:00 PM at Berryhill Funeral home, followed by service at 2:00. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery.
