Stephen "Steve" Wilbur Peckham of Madison, Alabama, passed away on March 15, 2025, at the age of 69. Steve was born December 22, 1955, in Fukuoka, Japan to Earle King & Joyce (Goss) Peckham. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and distinguished aerospace and defense executive. With over four decades of extraordinary service in military aviation and the aerospace industry, Steve leaves behind a powerful legacy of leadership, integrity, and deep love for his family.
Steve served honorably in the U.S. Army and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer W4 with the Legion of Merit award. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Infantryman in the 82nd Airborne Division in 1976. He was commissioned as an officer in 1980. He served as an Operational Aviator, Maintenance Test Pilot, and Instructor Pilot for rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft until his retirement in 1999. His expertise and unwavering commitment to mission success made a lasting impact on the U.S. Army Aviation and national defense.
After retiring from active military service, Steve continued to lead in the defense and aerospace sectors, holding executive roles at companies such as AAR CORP., Sikorsky Aircraft, Goodrich Aerospace, and Knowledge Point Education Consultants. He was instrumental in driving growth, streamlining operations, and mentoring future leaders. Steve later founded and led Grey Beard Aerospace & Defense Associates, a consulting firm dedicated to helping aerospace and defense organizations thrive through strong program execution and strategic guidance.
Steve's career was marked not only by professional excellence but also by his deep passion for mentorship and innovation. He traveled the world extensively, was a licensed commercial pilot, and was actively involved in numerous professional and industry organizations.
He is preceded in death by his father, Earle King Peckham Jr.; his mother, Joyce Goss Gibson; and his brothers, Earle K. "Skip" Peckham III and David "Dave" Peckham.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Michelle Peckham, and their children: Scott, Owen, Chloe and Isabelle. He is also survived by his adult children, Stephen Peckham (Naima) and Danielle Peckham; his brothers Tim Peckham (Cindy), Brian Peckham (Joy), and Chace Peckham; his sister Hazel Bain (Tommy); sisters-in-law Sharon Peckham & Diane Tracz; and many beloved extended family members. Steve loved his family fiercely, and he was endlessly proud of each of his children.
Steve Peckham's life was a testament to service, wisdom, and unwavering love. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him—for his leadership, his friendship, and his steady presence.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on April 25th, 2025 at Maple Hill Cemetery, 202 Maple Hill St SE, Huntsville, AL 35801.
