Van Wade Farris passed away on April 3rd at the age of 71.
Born in Lawrence County, Tennessee, Wade, as he was known by all who loved him, was preceded in death by his son, Kyle Farris, and his parents, Winfred K. Farris and Dorothy Marie Farris.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Michele (Wright) Farris; his daughter, Meagan West (Kris West); and his cherished grandchildren, Lawson and Madison Grace, who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his sister, Kay (Farris) McCall; his brother, Joe Farris (Barbara Farris); his brother-in-law, Bob Wright (Shannon Wright); his sister-in-law, Beth Friend (Duncan Friend); and several nieces and nephews.
Wade went directly into the United States Navy after high school and continued his service in the Navy Reserve Seabees, supporting engineering and construction operations. After his service, he attended the University of North Alabama, where an elective Spanish class led to a lifelong connection with his future brother-in-law. He later earned his Bachelor of Science in Finance and went on to obtain an associate degree in electronics engineering.
Wade was a natural problem-solver with a deep curiosity for how things worked. You could always expect to find him in his shop with a machine taken completely apart, working through it piece by piece, determined to understand it and put it back together himself. Early in his career, he owned and operated his own computer business in Madison, Alabama, before entering government contracting. His passion for technology and hands-on problem-solving carried into a long and impactful career supporting NASA programs at Marshall Space Flight Center.
At NASA, Wade worked in test area operations before moving into hardware and software integration supporting the Shuttle-era and spaceflight systems. He was known for his hands-on approach and dedication to his work and colleagues, and he remained committed through his final project, ensuring it was completed before retiring for a second time in November 2025.
Outside of work, Wade was happiest when building, fixing, tinkering, or exploring. Whether working on projects, working the land, or diving into a challenge simply to understand it better, he rarely sat still. He had a deep love for the outdoors, which led him and Michele to their cabin in Collinwood, Tennessee, where he felt at peace. Many weekends were spent there with his loyal dog, Ollie, by his side. The two were rarely apart, spending their time side by side, exploring the woods or simply enjoying each other’s company.
Wade had a constant desire to learn and a deep faith that he spoke about often and carried with him throughout his life. He enjoyed tennis, Tennessee football, and conversations that made people think.
He was also known for his offbeat sense of humor and the long, drawn-out jokes he loved to tell. Wade was a quiet and private man who often kept to himself, sharing little but meaning much. Those closest to him understood the depth of his heart and his love for his family.
The family will receive friends on April 27th at Berryhill Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a memorial service to follow at 4:00 p.m.
