Roy Edward Smith, 81, of New Market, AL passed away on February 29, 2016. Mr. Smith was drafted in 1957 and served in the US Army/Reserves from 1957 to 1964. He retired as a landfill operator with the Madison County Commission after 15 years of service and prior to that he owned and operated a grocery store in New Market.
Mr. Smith loved life, but most of all he loved his family. He loved to plant a garden each year and taking care of his rose bushes. He loved to cook and sit on the front porch. He was always a jolly, happy, and kindhearted person that will be missed by many. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Viola Smith, sister, Beatrice Hilliard, and brother, Horace Smith, Jr. and his beloved dog Smokey.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Janette Stilwell Smith; daughter, Yolanda Smith Belue (Ashley); granddaughter, Jessica Belue Tilson (Will). He is also survived by three stepchildren; Pam Cantrell (William), Pat Edger (Dwight), and Jimmy Jones as well as his brothers, Bobby Smith and Billy Smith, and one sister, Francis McClure. He is also survived by a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Berryhill Funeral Home, with a Chapel service Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Berryhill Funeral Home with Brother Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Cochran Cemetery in New Market
