Obituary

Donald Murphy, 72, of Madison, Alabama, passed away on August 3, 2025, in Madison. Born on March 25, 1953, in Athens, Alabama, Donald lived a life rooted in hard work, family devotion, and a deep connection to the land and water he loved.

From an early age, Donald embraced the values of diligence and perseverance. He began farming as a child, developing a strong work ethic that would shape his future endeavors. In 1985, he channeled that passion into founding Murphy Landscaping & Lawn Inc., a business he built from the ground up. Over the course of more than four decades, Donald's dedication transformed his company into a respected name throughout Madison. His craftsmanship and commitment to excellence are evident in countless lawns and landscapes across the city—a living legacy that continues to flourish.

Outside of his professional life, Donald found solace and joy in fishing. Whether casting a line at dawn or sharing stories by the water's edge, he cherished every moment spent outdoors. For him, fishing was not just a pastime but a way of life—one that brought him peace and reflection.

Donald's greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Melissa Ann Murphy; three children: Gwendolyn Diann Murphy, Donald Brandon Murphy (Victoria), and John David Murphy (Brooke); grandchildren:  Alexandra Reese, Victoria Gracen, Presley, Peyton, Donald Brandon Jr, (Katie) Harrison Grady, Braden; and great grandchildren: Brandon Whit, Oliver Lucas, Xander James and Brayden Jace. He also leaves behind his sister Gay Tucker (Fred), aunt Hattie Davis (David), and a host of loving family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents Roy Grady Murphy and Nany Earnestine Murphy; paternal grandparents Frank Jacob Murphy and Cordie Draper Murphy; and maternal grandparents Earnest and Nell Cornelius.

Donald's memory lives on through the beauty he cultivated in both nature and relationships. May his legacy continue to inspire those who knew him.
