Gerald Glenn
Bishop
January 15, 1937 – February 25, 2025
Gerald Glenn Bishop of Huntsville, AL, peacefully left his earthly home on Tuesday morning, February 25th.
Gerald was born at his home in Paducah, KY, to Mr. A.J. Bishop and Mrs. Lou Craig Bishop on January 15, 1937. He was the oldest of 4 children. Around the age of 9 years old, his family moved to Union City, TN, where he lived until he graduated high school. He attended Union City High School, where he excelled academically and enjoyed being on the basketball team. From the time he was old enough to work, he delivered newspapers and served as a caddy at the local golf course, saving enough money to eventually buy his own car. Upon graduating from UCHS in 1955, he moved to Knoxville, TN, to attend the University of Tennessee. While attending UT, Gerald met the love of his life, Marie Elaine Johnson. After graduating in the spring of 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, he accepted a job with the Army Rocket and Guided Missile Agency at Redstone Arsenal.
He and Marie married on Nov 12, 1960, and moved to Huntsville, AL, where they had two boys, Glenn and Keil. Shortly after moving to Huntsville, Gerald transferred to a job with NASA. Around the time frame of 1968-1969, NASA sent him to Dallas, TX, where he earned his master's degree in electrical engineering from Southern Methodist University. When the Bishops returned to Alabama, they purchased an 80-acre farm in Hazel Green, and turned a small farmhouse into a large, beautiful home. After many memories made and lots of hard work, they eventually sold the farm and moved to Monrovia. Gerald's years at NASA afforded him many rewarding opportunities including moving his family to Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Germany, from 1978 to 1980 to work on the European Space Agency Space Lab and working on the redesign of the solid rocket motor after the shuttle accident of 1986. His contributions resulted in the safe launch of subsequent shuttles. Gerald continued to work for NASA until he retired with a total of 37 years of civilian service.
Gerald loved the Lord, his family, his dogs, and University of TN sports. He was always active in church and faithfully attended Chase Park Church of Christ for the last 10-15 years of his life. He adored his family and took good care of them. He spent countless hours playing with his grandchildren and attending their sporting and band events, traveled all over the US with his lovely wife, remodeled the old farm truck into a show truck, attended UT Alumni events, football games, and basketball games, and just lived life to the fullest.
Gerald is predeceased by his father, his mother, and his two brothers, Howard David Bishop and Donald Floyd Bishop.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marie Bishop; two sons, Glenn Bishop (Colleen) and Keil Bishop (Jennifer); grandsons, Tyler Bishop, Eli Bishop (Mattie), and Elliot Bishop; granddaughter Kelly Norng (Jonathan); two great-grandchildren, Greyson and Ariel; his sister, Judy Griffin; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was loved much and will be greatly missed.
Mr. Bishop's family will receive friends on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Berryhill Funeral Home from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. The memorial service will immediately follow in the chapel, with Rusty Hills officiating.
