Herbert Dancy Steger Iii's Obituary

Herbert Dancy Steger III, 82, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025. He was born on June 27, 1942 in Petersburg, Virginia.

Mr. Steger grew up in Petersburg, Virginia. He married the love of his life, Linda Lou Redford in June 1964, and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a BS in English in 1965. He was selected for the US Army Material Command's Safety Management Intern Trainee Program, and began employment with the Army in 1966. He became the proud father of his twin daughters Cathy & Claire that same year. His work took his family to Charlestown, Indiana; Lawrence, Kansas; Jeffersonville, Indiana, and finally Huntsville, Alabama in 1974, working at Redstone Arsenal for the US Army Missile command. He retired from the MICOM Safety Office in 1997. After a brief time at home, Linda was ready for him to return to the workforce. He began his next career with O'Reilly Auto Parts and worked another 20 years as a delivery driver for different stores in the Huntsville area.

Herbert was an avid baseball fan – he followed the St. Louis Cardinals from a young age. When the Huntsville Stars came to town in 1985, he became a season ticket holder, and was known to players and fans as "Bullpen Herb".

He loved all kinds of music, from early R&B to current pop. Music was a big part of his life, and he shared it with everyone. We will never forget him singing "Uptown Funk" to anyone who would listen! Herb & Linda took many a beach vacation over the years – Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach, Orange Beach were their top destinations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Dancy Steger, Jr, and Mary Spencer Steger, and his sister, Mary Carolyn Mitton.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Redford Steger; daughters, Catherine Castle (James) and Claire Renner (Danny); 6 grandchildren: Dustin Hicklen (Ashley); Michael Hicklen (Lyric); Taylor Whisenant (Drew); Jacob Childers (Elizabeth); Zoe Ifill (Asa); Dancy Fox (Austin); 10 great grandchildren: Tristen & Julian Hicklen; Violet Hicklen; Everett Whisenant; Audrey, Kennedy, Brady, & Natalie Childers; Jet Ifill; and Elliott Fox; and a host of family and friends.

No services are planned at this time. To honor his memory, donations in Mr. Steger's name can be made to the American Lung Association. "G3 to double-F44...G3 to double-F44"
