John Charles Reed's Obituary

John Charles Reed, age 72, of Big Cove passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, after a lengthy battle with Lewy Body dementia. He was born at home in Hollywood, Alabama, on June 14, 1949, the first child of the late John Herbert and Edna Ruth (Swafford) Reed.
John married Katie Elaine Kent on December 20, 1968. They met in 1967 when they both worked at Kwik-Chek, later Winn Dixie, on Governor's Drive.  He graduated from S.R. Butler High School in 1969. He worked for the Kwik-Chek/Winn-Dixie grocery chain from bag boy at age 16 to store manager when he resigned in 1981. He joined Chambers Bottling Company/Coca-Cola, Huntsville, in 1982. In 1985, he started its subsidiary Redi-to-Serve, which he managed until his retirement in 2013.
John was one-of-a-kind with a keen sense of humor. He talked to anyone that would listen and to everyone on the same level. He could insult you in a way that would make you laugh about it and love him all the more. He was a fisherman, hunter, gun enthusiast and race car driver.  John loved history. He would often recite much of it along with specific dates until dementia robbed him of his memory. He was also proud of his own heritage be it ever so humble.
Most of all, he adored his six "all boy" grandsons and two granddaughters who were each a "princess." He always spent his Christmas bonus from work on costly gifts that he thought would be their favorites.
But the love of his life was BooBoo! Around June 2016, John mentioned that he had thought about getting himself a dog. Just a few weeks later, he looked out a window and saw a little puppy lying on his shoes he had left outside. The pup's mother had taken her litter for a walk and somehow this little fellow had been left behind. He won John's heart. From then on, if you were around John he would tell you about BooBoo. And, he would often sit in the swing with his arm wrapped around BooBoo's neck and be heard to say, "I love you BooBoo."
John is survived by his wife, Elaine, and their two sons: Jonathan Kent Reed (Lee Ann) and Adam Duane Reed (Kristen); his grandchildren: Jonathan's children Nicholas (Lindsey), Nathan (Katrina), Noah, and NeelyGrace; and Adam's children Adam (Payton), Lindsay Kate, Landon,
and his namesake John Carter; and three brothers: Ronnie (Kathy), Roger (Marsha) and Ricky. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his only sister, Dean Powers.
Visitation will be at Berryhill Funeral Home on Friday, November 26, from 3 to 8 pm. A graveside service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, November 27, officiated by Bro. Chad Holland, at Green Valley Cemetery, 2487 Old Big Cove Road, Owens Cross Roads, AL 35763.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Nick, Nate, Adam, Noah, and Landon and his nephew Grant Reed.  His grandson John Carter Reed and special cousin Jett Westin Law will serve as ushers.  Honorary pallbearers will be his good friends Donnie Payne, Charles Pogue, and Jim Quillin.
