Joyce Ann Barnett (née Esters), born on October 18, 1939, in Carroll County, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, in Huntsville, Alabama, surrounded by her loving family.
The daughter of Ervin Paul Esters and Lestie Myrtle Smith Esters, Joyce grew up in a close-knit family. She graduated from Southside High School and earned a degree in Accounting from West Tennessee Business College. A devoted Christian, Joyce's life was guided by her deep faith and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. She found joy in singing, playing the piano and accordion, and gathering with family for meals.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Barnett; her daughter, Lori Ann Austin; her sisters, Mary Wynona Haynes (Noble) and Mildred Louis Harris (Kelly); and her brother, Clyde Newton Estes (Bobbie). She is survived by her son, Kenneth Marlyn Austin (Gene); stepson, Ken Barnett (Lisa); her sister, Polly Darnall (Mike); five grandchildren—three of whom she raised, Cody, Nichole, and Nicholas; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who were part of her extended family.
A trailblazer in the business world, Joyce owned and operated El Mejicano Restaurant in Huntsville for 30 years. She deeply valued her staff and loyal customers. Her commitment to service extended to Meals on Wheels, where she generously donated food to those in need. Joyce also served as President of both the local and National Restaurant Association. Her exceptional contributions earned her recognition as Woman of the Year and Outstanding Business Woman of the Year in Huntsville.
Joyce's legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind.
