Obituary

Margaret Thomas Edwards passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022 surrounded by her children. Margaret was born in Huntsville, Alabama on February 11, 1949 to Nathan and Frances (Lawrence) Thomas. She attended schools in Madison County where she skipped one grade, was the valedictorian of her ninth-grade class and made the high school cheerleading team. She was a beautiful and kind person who could not imagine breaking a rule. Closest she came to doing so was being talked into skipping school one day. They had barely left the school grounds when she had them take her back.

Margaret married Douglas Ray Edwards on June 5, 1966. She became a housewife and mother to five children and a second mom to many, many more. It was during this chapter in her life where she once was a team mother for her son's sports team, a class mother for her oldest daughter, and a friend to many. As her kids grew and had families of their own, she was often the one they returned to when they were recovering from surgeries, had just given birth to their own kids, or were sick. There were so many times that if they couldn't come to her, she came to them in a moments notice. She was often the one they talked to when they wanted to vent, talk, or ask advice. She was so very proud of everyone of her kids and absolutely lived for them.

Margaret was a great cook. A holiday was not a holiday without her dressing, banana pudding, or chocolate pies. Her grandkids never came over without her trying to feed them. Goodness knows there will never be a pancake as good as hers according to the grands. She would be so proud and honored to know they were all getting together for a pancake breakfast to honor her.

After her kids grew up Margaret started another chapter in her life when she joined Madison Village. It was there that she made some great friends whom she cherished. They had many outings together where they visited museums, went to concerts, gospel sings, shopping, and had many fun activities together. She was most proud of their vegetable garden and loved when the food they grew was included in their meals. She also was able to get back into church with a friend who would come pick her up every week and take her to Wall Highway Baptist Church where she was a member.

When Margaret was unable to continue her busy social life at Madison Village she moved to Madison Manor and made new friends, participated in their activities (bingo was a favorite), and participated in art classes. Some of her favorite times was on Sundays when a preacher from Bell Minor Church visited with a sermon and they heard guest gospel singers. As time went on, Margaret was asked and consented to join some of the committees. She loved when she could help someone else and tried to do so as often as she could. It wasn't uncommon for her caregivers to tell her children that she was their favorite, she was such a sweet woman, or that they knew all about them because of how much she bragged about all of them.

As someone who had a tremendous amount of difficulties in her own life, she never judged anyone for their struggles and only saw them as the person they were. She was really good at seeing the truth of who someone was and noticing the small things that told her so much about them.

Margaret was a wonderful person, friend, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was happy anytime she could spend time with or bragging about her family. She made such a big impact in this world through the things she taught others. To say she will be missed is such an understatement.

Margaret is survived by four of her five children: Tammie Edwards, Sherry Edwards Knighten (Doyle), Douglas (Doug) Ray Edwards II (Cassie), Susan Edwards Arnold (Chris), twelve grandchildren: Candace Smart, Michael (Mikey) Smart, Tiffany Pugh, Kirsten Knighten, Dekota Edwards, Hailey Edwards, Levi Edwards, Brienna Fanning, Bella Fanning, Michael Arnold, Ashley Arnold, and Destinee Edwards, and eight great grandchildren: Alexis Smart, Aubrey Smart, Peyton Smart, Abigail Stewart, Liberty Miller, Zoe Edwards, Lewis Edwards, and Preston Edwards. She is also survived by her Sister Carolyn Davis (Larry) and brother Terry Thomas (Martha). She is preceded by a son Dennis Coty Edwards.

Visitation will be held at noon on Saturday September 10, 2022 at Berryhill Funeral Home with the service in the chapel at 2 pm. The burial will be at Valhalla immediately following.
