Nina Beal of Huntsville, Alabama, peacefully passed away on September 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was a tireless, devoted champion for all creatures great and small, and her legacy is forever etched in the hearts of countless animals.

Born in Tennessee on June 10, 1941, Nina discovered her enduring passion for animal welfare at a young age. Her commitment led her to dedicate countless hours to volunteering at the Huntsville Humane Center, and in March 1990, she played a pivotal role in founding The Ark, Inc. Over the decades, Nina rescued and fostered dozens of vulnerable animals, providing them with loving homes and unmatched compassion. She was truly a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to her unwavering love for the animals in our community.

Nina and her husband Doug opened The Ark, a no-kill, non-profit animal shelter in Huntsville, out of Nina's deep love and commitment to protect those who could not speak for themselves. For over 30 years, Nina poured her heart and soul into this mission, working tirelessly alongside city officials and a dedicated group of volunteers to transform the lives of countless homeless animals. Her relentless advocacy for rescue and rehabilitation was nothing short of inspiring.

Under Nina's compassionate leadership, The Ark adopted a beautiful mission: to rescue and find loving homes for as many animals as possible, ensuring each one received essential veterinary care-including spaying and neutering before adoption-while maintaining a no-kill policy except in truly dire situations. Every animal that entered The Ark was embraced with warmth and care, receiving shelter and preventative veterinary services. Nina ensured they were nurtured in a home-like environment as they awaited the families they so desperately deserved.

Nina's spirit will forever live on through the countless animals she saved and the hearts she opened. She will be deeply missed, and her impact will resonate for many years to come.

Nina is survived by her devoted husband, Doug, her daughter, Tina Vitacco (Tom), her sisters, Janell Adkins and Joan Faulk, numerous dedicated volunteers, and several cherished four-legged friends. Her selfless compassion and dedication will be profoundly missed by the local animal welfare community and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Berryhill Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, with the service immediately following in the chapel at 4:00 pm with Scott Gossett officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Ark, Inc., in honor of Nina's extraordinary legacy.
