Thomas Hogan
Duerr
January 7, 1928 – January 23, 2025
Thomas Hogan Duerr, at the age of 97 left this life on January, 23, 2025 to be with our Lord in Heaven.
The second of three children, he was born in Canton Ohio on January 7, 1928 to Ernest and Marie Duerr. He grew up in Canton during the depression. While in high school he worked at the Republic Steel Mill to pay for his tuition at the University of Notre Dame. His college education was put on hold when he enlisted in the US army during WWII. He served state-side working at Percy Jones General Hospital, a facility that treated wounded soldiers. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1951, he began working in Chicago for the Griscom-Russell Company where he met his future wite, Mary Ann Fitzgerald. After marrying in 1955, the couple moved to Huntsville Alabama where Tom would work for 30 years as an engineer for U.S. Army Missile Command on Redstone Arsenal and where they would together raise their six children. Like all of his efforts, whether in his career or in his personal life, he always did his best. He earned his master's degree in engineering mechanics from the University of Alabama in 1963, was later promoted to supervisor in his job, received many citations and awards, and still made time to spend with his children teaching them how to throw a baseball, change the oil in a vehicle or how to solve an algebra problem. He wrote poetry to his wife and often kept her amused, as well as his children, with his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. Tom was a life-long and devoted Catholic, having served as an altar boy in Canton, and a catechism teacher at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Huntsville. His children remember with smiles that with their dad, going to mass was never an option. In retirement, he continued to remain active, working for Stone Engineering into his 80's. Also, being an avid gardener and yardman, he spent many hours happily toiling in his yard. But the majority of his time he spent with the love of his life, Mary, his children and grandchildren. Tom Duerr was an extraordinary man, leaving his family and friends a bounty of wonderful memories to cherish and an example of a life that was a blessing to others.
He is survived by his wife of over 69 years Mary Ann Fitzgerald Duerr, six children, Brian Duerr, Lisa Fitzgerald (Frank), Matthew Duerr (Joe), Christine Snyder, Jennifer Duerr and Jonathan Duerr (Kathy) and 8 grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Tut Fann State Veteran's Home and Hospice of North Alabama for their exceptional care and love shown to Tom during his last year of life.
A private family service will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Huntsville.
Tom Duerr's ash remains will be interred at Good Shepherd Catholic Church Columbarium.
